Titrimetric Monitoring Of Anaerobic Digestion: VFA, Alkalinities and More

چکیده
Volatile fatty acids and bicarbonate measurements are important to assess a digester’s stability and to control it. Titration methods are the most likely cost-effective methods to determine those variables with acceptable accuracy. In this paper, titrimetic methods will be classified and evaluated. Two titrimetric sensors are compared for their potential on-line use. One sensor uses advanced interpretation techniques to quantify almost any buffering system while the other uses approximate methods that assume bicarbonate and VFA are the dominating buffers. A specific experiment was performed to run the two sensors during an overload situation of a 1 m fixed bed anaerobic reactor with the aim to assess their accuracy. Also, the results show the dynamic evolution of bicarbonate and VFA in the digester during overload conditions. In addition to VFA and bicarbonate, lactate was determined titrimetrically during the overload conditions.

On-line titrimetric sensor for the control of VFA and/or alkalinity in anaerobic digestion processes treating industrial vinas
This paper describes the principle and the technical details of a cheap titrimetric sensor for the measurements of total and partial alkalinity and the estimation of bicarbonate and volatile fatty acids concentrations in anaerobic digestion processes. The on-line operation of the sensor connected to a 1 m upflow fixed bed reactor treating raw industrial wine vinasses has been shown to be reliab...
متن کاملApplying the least squares method for the titrimetric determination of the concentration of VFA.
The titrimetric method is used for on-site measurement of the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in anaerobic treatment. In current practice, specific and interpolated pH-volume data points are used to obtain the concentration of VFA by solving simultaneous equations iteratively to convergence (denoted as SEq). Here, the least squares method (LSM) is introduced as an elegant alternati...
متن کاملEvaluation of the 5 and 8 pH point titration methods for monitoring anaerobic digesters treating solid waste.
Simple titration methods certainly deserve consideration for on-site routine monitoring of volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and alkalinity during anaerobic digestion (AD), because of their simplicity, speed and cost-effectiveness. In this study, the 5 and 8 pH point titration methods for measuring the VFA concentration and carbonate system alkalinity (H2CO3*-alkalinity) were assessed and...
متن کاملImplementation and process analysis of pilot scale multi-phase anaerobic fermentation and digestion of faecal sludge in Ghana
Background. In Ghana, faecal sludge (FS) from on-site sanitation facilities is often discharged untreated into the environment, leading to significant insults to environmental and human health. Anaerobic digestion offers an attractive pathway for FS treatment with the concomitant production of energy in the form of methane. Another innovative option includes separating digestion into acidogene...
متن کاملKinetics of volatile fatty acids and hydrogen production during anaerobic digestion of organic waste material
This short paper describes the changes in VFA and hydrogen production in time, during an anaerobic microbial digestion where the organic waste material was given as a substrate. The experiment showed that the reaction run most efficiently between 6 and 10th hour of the reaction time. This can be an indicator for future experiments on VFA and hydrogen production optimisation.
